Going through a divorce in New Jersey is traumatic enough without the abuse of a spouse. When domestic violence, harassment and violent tempers are involved the divorce can become much harder. Emotions are charged and actions can lead to the need for restraining orders.
Recently a judge placed a restraining order on White Stripes band member Jack White. According to his ex-wife Karen Elson, Mr. White contacted her paralegal in a harassing manner. She further alleged he has a violent temper and is prone to sending harassing emails and text messages. According to the restraining order, White is barred from having any contact with his wife unless it’s regarding their children. Even then, any contact regarding their children must come through email.
Going through a divorce is a troubling experience. When a restraining order is involved, difficult emotions, fears and struggle are taken to a whole new level.
An order for protection can be obtained for those who are experiencing harassment. Under the New Jersey prevention of domestic violence act, harassing emails and text messages can be enough to obtain a restraining order. A restraining order can prohibit any physical contact and order the person abusing to stay away from the home, workplace, school or other location, maintain a certain distance from the person being protected, limit or prohibit any sort of contact by email, telephone, text or mail, and order the abuser to provide child support and/or alimony.
If a person is being abused and going through emotional distress, talking to a legal professional skilled in family law can be a good option.
