Child support does not cover everything

Posted Jun 18, 2014

On behalf of Morris, Downing & Sherred, LLP posted in Divorce on Wednesday, June 18, 2014.

Parents in New Jersey who are going through a divorce know how many details and complications the proceedings can bring. Parents who are negotiating child support should keep in mind that child support does not support every need of the child. During the negotiations, parents should think about what additional expenses their child may have.

When a parent is going through a divorce and modifying their household to one adult, there are many expenses that need to be considered during the divorce negotiations. When kids are involved in the divorce, it can be a good idea to think about the additional expenses that may arise and would not be covered with child support. There are many expenses that are not covered by child support. When a child is young, daycare/childcare expenses are the largest expense not covered. Older children have extracurricular activities, including sports, music lessons, camps, tutoring, music instruments, etc. These expenses are typically swallowed by the custodial parent, but knowing that they will pop up is important for parents.

Divorce proceedings for couples with children can be complicated and emotional. Child support, parenting time, alimony, property division and many other issues can cause many disagreements. Having an advocate during the proceedings is important in making sure that the divorce agreement is fair. A legal professional skilled in family law can help a person navigate the proceedings and provide advice for their client. They can negotiate a fair settlement, so that the new single parent family can emerge from the divorce strong and ready for a fresh start.

Parents going through a divorce in New Jersey have many things they need to negotiate during the proceedings. Keeping in mind that not all of their children’s expenses are covered by child support is important so that realistic expectations are met.
