Several people were injured when a car collided with a New Jersey Transit bus in Newark on May 1. The crash happened shortly before 2 a.m.
According to police, a dark red Cadillac was traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran a stop light and smashed into the side of a No. 34 New Jersey Transit bus, which travels between Newark and Bloomfield, near the intersection of Central Avenue and South Eighth Street. A passenger in the Cadillac suffered critical injuries and was transported to University Hospital in Newark. Several bus passengers were treated for various injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
The Cadillac driver allegedly fled the scene on foot but was apprehended several blocks away. He also suffered critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Authorities said he has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. The collision remains under investigation.
