Many couples are unhappy, but scared of divorce

Posted Jul 24, 2013

On behalf of Morris, Downing & Sherred, LLP posted in Divorce on Wednesday, July 24, 2013.

When a New Jersey couple gets married they assume that it will last forever. However, people change, and, often, relationships are not able to withstand the test of time and the stressors of life. When divorce crosses a person’s mind, it is usually followed by many agonizing emotions.

A recent study showed that many couples, who are married are currently unhappy, are scared to file for divorce. The study listed ten reasons why couples who are in an unhappy marriage delay the divorce. These reasons include the following: they may regret the divorce, would not be able to financially keep current lifestyle, too old, do not have the courage, hope things get better, need to stay together for the kids, feel guilty, do not want to sell the family home, fear of being lonely and scared to be alone. All of these reasons can lead to a couple staying together and being miserable. Divorce can be a scary and uncertain event, but many times people who go through it come out the other side happier.

Although divorce can be scary, it can also lead to a new and happier life for many individuals. While there are many facets of divorce proceedings, a legal professional skilled in divorce can help navigate things like alimony, child support, retirement accounts, personal and business property and child custody. Marriage is wonderful when it works, but, when it does not, it can be a major strain on families, including spouses and children. Divorce can help start a new life for everyone, and, eventually, lead to greater contentment.
