How HR can help make workplaces safer

Workplace safety needs to be a priority for New Jersey business owners and business owners throughout the nation. Employees could be at risk for injury regardless of whether they work outside or behind a desk in an office. Typically, the issue only gets more important as a company grows and tries to balance safety with efficiency. Ideally, a company will work toward creating a safety culture where everyone takes ownership of their health and the well-being of their fellow worker.

This starts by identifying the physical risks that employees may face. One idea may be to ask workers if they have any concerns to get a better idea of what a safety plan should entail. Once a plan has been put into place, it may be a good idea to study employee behavior to determine if they are following the plan.

If not, find out why this is the case. Then, management should try to address employee concerns and find ways to create a safety plan that they take seriously and are willing to abide by. In some cases, employees cut corners because it saves time. This could mean that workers feel overextended, which may make it necessary to hire more workers.

Employees who are subject to unsafe working conditions may have a higher risk of getting hurt or sick at work. Those who do get hurt or sick at work may wish to talk to an attorney. An attorney might be able to help preserve a worker’s rights and ensure that he or she gets the workers’ compensation benefits that he or she is entitled to. In some cases, benefits may be extended on a permanent basis if an injured worker cannot return to work.
