New Jersey fans of the rapper and singer Nas and Kelis may be aware that the two have had ongoing disputes about child custody. The two reached an agreement in March over time with their 8-year-old son, and the agreement reportedly included who would get the child on certain holidays.
However, Nas alleges that he was supposed to have their son during Passover, which started on March 30, but Kelis would not allow it. He said she screamed at him when he arrived for the pickup and would not let the child go with him. She says the child wanted to remain with her. According to Nas, she has made it hard for him to see the child including not allowing him to pick up their child from school.
Nas is also asking Kelis to foot the bill for the $22,000 in attorney fees he has to pay when she violates their custody agreement. The attorneys for the two have reportedly also been flinging insults back and forth.
Unfortunately, disputes over child custody do not always end with the divorce. In fact, they might continue to be just as contentious for years. This is not an ideal situation, so parents should strive to create a workable child custody arrangement as well as a way to resolve conflict that arises. For example, parents might include in the parenting plan an agreement to go to mediation if they are unable to resolve a dispute. If conflicts frequently erupt during pickups and drop offs, they might revise the parenting plan to move these to a neutral location. If a parent repeatedly violates a custody agreement, it might eventually affect the parent’s access to the child.
