More divorces occur in January than in any other month. This could be for a number of reasons. One might be that people want to get through the holidays as a family or it could be that they want a fresh start to the New Year. Another reason that couples separate at the first of the year is to avoid filing joint taxes with their spouse. Whatever the reason, studies have shown that January is the busiest month for divorce.
When filing for a divorce, there are a few things that people should be aware of. The first is that a person’s life will change after a divorce. The household will now be divided into two separate households with each person supporting themselves. The two separate households will now be responsible for their own utilities, as well as mortgage and car payments and insurance. There are many expenses that people may not even think about, so it may be helpful to make an itemized list of all expenses before going through a divorce.
The second aspect is that lawyers may use language that some may not understand. Because they deal with divorce issues on a daily basis, things that may seem simple to them may be complex to their clients. It is important for a person going through a divorce to make sure they understand everything their attorney is talking about and to ask questions if they need clarification.
The final aspect to remember is that nobody wins in a divorce. The end of a marriage is a hard time for everyone involved. Couples who are going through a divorce should do everything they can to make the process as painless as possible for their children as well. Keeping a family as least affected by these tremendous changes is critical.
