How to choose a divorce lawyer

Posted Feb 5, 2014

On behalf of Morris, Downing & Sherred, LLP posted in Divorce on Wednesday, February 5, 2014.

Couples who are considering a divorce and the end of a marriage have many decisions they need to make in New Jersey. One decision is choosing a lawyer to help them through the process. There are many legal issues in a divorce and choosing the right attorney is important.

The first step in choosing the right lawyer is to understand what the lawyer’s purpose is. A spouse needs to remember that the divorce attorney is there to help with legal issues, not to be the counselor, coach, etc. It is important to be realistic about what a person can expect a divorce lawyer to do. Second, keep focused on the goal of getting divorced in the least amount of time possible. Don’t get sidetracked by emotions, material items, etc. Third, know what unique circumstances are going to surround the divorce. Will it be simple? Are children involved? Knowing what kind of issues the divorce will entail will help a person determine which lawyer can help.

Next, identify at least three attorneys before making the decision. Fifth, interview potential lawyers and ask them about their typical client, charges and fees, resources they recommend, etc. Sixth, identify any red flags. Lawyers should not make promises regarding the outcome of the divorce case. They should also not divulge information about their other clients, including high-profile cases. They should also treat their clients with respect and be focused during the interview. The final step is to actually choose the lawyer. This professional should be local, knowledgeable and a good communicator.

New Jersey residents who are considering a divorce should consider consulting a legal professional skilled in family law. An attorney can help his or her client navigate the legal system and figure out a divorce arrangement that is fair to both parties.

There are several steps that people considering a divorce should go through in choosing a lawyer. A good lawyer can help his or her client through one of the toughest times of their lives and come out on the other side with both feet on the ground.
