Hope for New Jersey spinal cord injury victims

Posted May 15, 2014

On behalf of Morris, Downing & Sherred, LLP posted in Spinal Cord Injuries on Thursday, May 15, 2014.

Injuries to the spinal cord can have long-term implications. Someone who has suffered a spinal cord injury may need extensive rehabilitation to regain basic mobility. Some injuries leave victims significantly disabled or even paralyzed. Medical advances can help those who are suffering from a spinal cord injury, but procedures and outpatient care have significant costs for New Jersey residents.

A recently released study shows a possible new development in therapy for people suffering from spinal cord injuries. Some patients who had suffered from paralysis for over two years were able to regain partial control over their legs with the aid of electrodes that were placed near their spines. Some patients were able to engage in specific motor tasks, indicating that even those who have been paralyzed for over two years can regain control of some movement. The success of the treatment may prove beneficial in years to come.

A spinal cord injury is one of the most difficult injuries to recover from. Treatment can be complicated and costly. If an injury occurs at work, workers’ compensation benefits can help cover medical expenses and lost income, as well as provide compensation for the disability. If the injury did not occur at work and was due to the negligence of someone else, compensation can often be recovered through a civil lawsuit.

Recovery from a spinal injury varies from person to person. There are new treatments being developed like the electric stimulation therapy that can help some people regain some function. Technology is constantly improving, but the consequences of the injury are still serious, and a lawsuit or workers’ compensation claim can help the victim deal with the financial repercussions.
