Elderly woman killed in 2-car crash

Posted Dec 29, 2014

On behalf of Morris, Downing & Sherred, LLP posted in Motor Vehicle Accidents on Monday, December 29, 2014.

A two-car crash on Route 66 in New Jersey resulted in the death of an 80-year-old woman on Dec. 14. The accident occurred in front of a Home Depot store in Neptune at about 8:25 a.m. The drivers were the only people involved in the accident.

According to a spokesman from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the fatal car accident happened while a 24-year-old man was traveling eastbound in a Nissan Altima. For an unknown reason, the man drifted over the centerline and struck a westbound Chrysler Sebring driven by an 80-year-old woman. The woman was pronounced dead after she was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Medical personnel took the driver of the Nissan to the hospital as well. It is unclear what injuries he had, but reports indicate that he was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Following the crash, the Department of Transportation was forced to shut down a section of Route 66 from Jumping Brook Road to Green Grove Road for several hours in both directions. There were no reports of any criminal charges being filed as a result of the crash.

After someone is killed in a wrong-way crash, the victim’s family may decide to file a wrongful death claim against the liable driver. Many families choose to hire an attorney while pursuing a civil claim for compensation. An attorney may help the family to support their claim with a solid collection of evidence. Families often seek reimbursement for funeral expenses, end-of-life medical care, and pain and suffering.
